Impact We've Made

HSC has developed an effective approach that is helping transform the school experience for children in Chicago and across the nation. This means working at multiple levels — with individual schools, throughout Chicago and nationally. The goal is a future in which all students have access to a school environment that provides healthy food, physical activity, nutrition education and health services. This gives students the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills to live healthy lives.

Here, we are happy to share a small snapshot of these efforts. We invite you to learn more about our work on this site — from food policy to environmental justice and much more. If you would like to discuss these efforts in more detail, please contact us.

Transforming School Food
350,000+ students in Chicago Public Schools are eating healthier school food—including regionally-grown produce and chicken raised without antibiotics in nearby Indiana—thanks to policies and practices the district has put in place with HSC’s support. Nationally, HSC is putting student voices front and center in the policy dialogue around school food through our Cooking up Change healthy cooking contest. We are joining advocates across the nation to speak up for health-promoting standards for all food sold in schools.

Transforming School Fitness
All Chicago elementary students will enjoy the benefits of recess starting in the 2012-2013 school year! HSC parent leaders have advocated for the return of recess for years. They spoke up at both the school and district levels about the importance of recess for learning and development. HSC played a major role in successfully advocating for this policy change. Now, we are working on initiatives to ensure that all students have access to quality P.E. and safe, healthy schoolyards where they can learn and play.

Transforming School Facilities and Operations
175,000+ school decision-makers are making their schools healthier with the support of, HSC's online resource that providess schools with the information and tools needed to implement a healthy, environmentally responsible cleaning program.

Transforming the Classroom Experience
100+ teachers representing 55 Chicago schools are teaching lessons in healthy new ways thanks to Fit to Learn. HSC created this professional development program to focus on integrating physical activity and nutrition education seamlessly into the classroom and school. With lessons from this on-the-ground experience, HSC is advocating to make health part of our national education policy

Transforming School Nursing
97 percent of school nurses who completed HSC’s School Nurse Leadership Program reported that they had made changes related to school food just six months after completing the training. HSC has built a strong community of nurse advocates across the nation and a solid foundation for advocacy in school nursing. Now, we are advocating for resources that would support a school nurse in every school, bringing all students the health and learning benefits this provides.

These numbers represent a small snapshot of HSC's impact. We invite you to learn more about our work, from food policy to environmental justice and much more, throughout this site. If you would like to discuss these efforts in more detail, please contact us.
