About

Green Clean Schools is the Healthy Schools Campaign's national partnership to promote green cleaning in schools. The initiative brings together the cleaning industry, educational leaders, parents, community leaders and advocates in a rapidly growing Green Team whose mission is to encourage schools to adopt cleaning programs that protect health without harming the environment.

The Green Team engages school decision-makers at the national, state and local levels through distribution of The Quick and Easy Guide to Green Cleaning in Schools, the GreenCleanSchools.org website and other outreach activities.

The partnership grew out of Healthy Schools Campaign’s (HSC) work to promote green cleaning Chicago Public Schools. HSC released the first Quick and Easy Guide to Green Cleaning in Schools in Oct. 2006 and has since distributed more than 70,000 copies of the guide with the support of national education stakeholder organizations and cleaning industry leaders. In Sept. 2008, HSC released an updated, expanded second edition of the guide with a team of 39 sponsors and 16 participating organizations.

In the two years since its initial release, the guide has continued to influence the marketplace and policy environment for green cleaning.

The five simple steps outlined in the guide are used as the basis for the American School & University national green cleaning award for schools, and the guide was instrumental in successful advocacy to require green cleaning in all Illinois schools. HSC and key partners will work with state-level advocates at the Green Clean Schools National Summit in Washington, D.C. to discuss strategies for state-by-state advocacy promoting green cleaning in schools.
