Since 1993, The OrganWise Guys Inc. has partnered with a variety of public and private entities to bring science-based nutrition, physical activity, and other lifestyle behavior messages to children. Their specialty is combining a depth of knowledge of the research on nutrition and preventive health care practices with creative, attention-getting, curriculum-linked resources that challenge listeners to change their behavior.
The OrganWise Guys consist of a cast of characters, Hardy Heart, Calci M. Bone, Sir Rebrum the brain, Madame Muscle, etc., that inspire children to take charge of their health because The OrganWise Guys "love who they live in" and are counting on them to make healthy choices!
The programs are based on promoting four basic lifestyle habits: maintaining a low-fat diet, eating high-fiber foods, drinking lots of water, and engaging in regular exercise; these are the building blocks of sound preventive health practices.
The materials consist of books, activity books, DVDs, puzzles, dolls and more. The non-consumable items are organized into a CORE KIT with specific products for students in each grade, PreK through fifth. Lesson plans are also available to make implementation seamless.
Additional items are also available that complement the CORE KIT. WISERCISE! is an in-classroom piece that combines 10-minute sessions of physical activity with core academic subjects to keep students on task while adding exercise to their day. Grade-specific activity books are also offered to reinforce lessons taught via the curriculum and can double as a take-home piece to engage parents in wellness education.
Recently, the Dell Foundation commissioned the Cooper Institute to evaluate over 300 childhood obesity projects around the country. They awarded a GOLD rating to the Delta HOPE Tri-State Initiative (HOPE), which was funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The OrganWise Guys materials are the cornerstone of this project. In addition, The OrganWise Guys program was the first recipient of the Department of Health and Human Services Innovation in Prevention Award for a school-based setting.
Programs containing these materials can now be found in projects across the United States as the national call for obesity prevention escalates.
