Senate Committee Unanimously Approves Green Clean Schools Act

Rep. Karen May, who sponsored the Green Clean Schools Act in the House, checks out green cleaning equipment at Jones College Prep High School after the press conference announcing the bill.

Children, teachers, and school staff in Illinois may soon be able to breathe a little easier during the day. The Illinois Senate Education Committee voted 9-0 to send the Green Clean Schools Act, HB895, on to a vote before the full Senate. (Check out our press release for all the details.)

This bill has been a major priority in HSC’s legislative agenda for 2007, and we’re thrilled with its continued progress.

If the bill becomes law, Illinois will become the only second state to require green cleaning programs in schools.

“Green cleaning really is a simple but very important way to protect the health of everyone who passes through your school’s doors,” said Bill Thompson, director of facilities at Lockport Township High School.

“I’ve seen the negative health effects of traditional cleaning chemicals first-hand,” Thompson said. “And I can tell you there’s a better way. Green cleaning is the right thing to do, not only for children but for the custodial staff who work with the chemicals every day.”

We are now preparing for a floor vote in the Senate, which we expect to take place within the next two weeks. Visit our Green Clean Schools Act website to learn more and find out what you can do to support this important bill.

NPR's Peter Sagal Joins HSC's Marathon Team as Honorary Team Captain

Peter Sagal, the quick-witted host of NPR’s humorous weekly quiz show, Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! and an accomplished marathon runner, is serving as Honorary Team Captain of Healthy Schools Campaign's 2007 Marathon Team.

“I started running seriously as a mid-life crisis,” says Sagal, a father of three young girls. “And we just can’t afford to wait until our kids turn forty before they get inspired to exercise. There are so many artificial amusements for children these days, which distract them from what they would naturally love, namely, running around like maniacs. I’m happy to help bring the message to kids and schools that a little maniacal running around is a great thing.”

HSC’s marathon team welcomes all volunteers, sponsors and runners who have registered for the marathon. Learn more or join the team »

HSC at the International Exchange Forum

View from a school cafeteria that HSC's Jean Saunders visited in France

Jean Saunders, HSC’s director of school wellness, served as part of an American delegation to the 2007 International Exchange Forum on Children, Obesity, Food Choice and the Environment in the Loire Valley of France, April 22-27.

Saunders wrote daily about the forum and her experiences in France on HSC's blog. Her entries include guest blogs from other delegates and photos from a school cafeteria in France. To read her observations, visit her travel blog or check out some of these posts:

The Mystery of the Missing Menus | We walked the beautiful cobblestone streets taking in the sights and sounds, chatting with the friendly locals and stopping at countless cafes and bistros to examine the myriad menus handwritten in white chalk on blackboards. We are in France to explore the ways in which the French feed their children, so it wasn't long before I noticed a glaring omission: Where were the children's menus? ... Read more

A History Lesson About Food | Let me share the history lesson we had Wednesday -- a history lesson about food. . . Prior to this time, eating among the gentry was completely communal in almost every sense; people had neither their own forks nor their own napkins. They ate with their hands and wiped those dirty hands on the table runner. ... Read more

A School Lunch We'd All Enjoy | Probably the best way to share with you what I've learned about school food in France is to start with the school lunch we ate Thursday: salad of butter lettuce with smoked duck, tomato and fresh mozzarella salad, smoked salmon with asparagus and creme fraiche, roasted chicken with roasted root vegetables and roasted potatoes, apples with sabyon, fresh strawberries, goat cheese, french bread, and water. ... In May, Saunders will discuss her findings at two Lunch & Learn presentations organized by HSC around international perspectives on childhood obesity and school food. The first is scheduled for May 16 in DuPage; the second will take place May 24 in Chicago.

Parents United for Healthy Schools Lobby in Springfield

Rep. Mary Flowers with Parents United for Healthy Schools leaders and their children.
More than 40 parents from Chicago communities affected by health disparities traveled to Springfield on Tuesday, April 24, to speak up for school recess, green cleaning, and an agenda of legislation for healthy school environments. (Read the press release for more details.)

"In the Latino neighborhood in which I live, I see the number of kids who are obese increasing dramatically," said Jovita Flores of the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization.

Flores is an active parent leader in HSC’s Parents United for Healthy Schools / Padres Unidos Para Escuelas Saludables, a coalition of more than 30 independent parent organizations representing Chicago communities affected by health disparities.

"When I recognized the disparities our children face, I knew I had to get involved," said Flores. "Parents are the most important messengers for these issues, because we have something at stake."

"Green Cleaning for Dummies" Features HSC's Quick & Easy Guide

Steve Ashkin, author of HSC’s Quick & Easy Guide to Green Cleaning in Schools, recently co-authored the book Green Cleaning for Dummies. Ashkin's new book includes a prominent focus on green cleaning in schools and features HSC's Quick & Easy Guide to Green Cleaning in Schools as a reference.

The special industry-specific book made its debut this month at the ISSA conference for leaders in the cleaning and maintenance industries.

Bill Balek, Director of Legislative Affairs for ISSA, said that Ashkin and co-author David Holly “were involved in green cleaning long before it became mainstream, and they continue to provide outstanding leadership as green cleaning gains momentum and becomes the norm.”

We Heard It ...

"I was in a mall walking by the arcade and I saw these kids playing D.D.R., and I was just stunned ... There were all these kids dancing and sweating and actually standing in line and paying money to be physically active. And they were drinking water, not soda. It was a physical educator's dream."
- Linda M. Carson, a professor at West Virginia University's School of Physical Education and director of the state's Motor Development Center, quoted in The New York Times, April 30, 2007. Carson is an advocate of Dance Dance Revolution, which West Virginia will install in 765 of its public schools by next year.
