Principals See Benefits of Physical Activity in Schools
HSC’s Principals for Healthy Schools Group Develops Strategies to Support School Wellness

In Chicago Public Schools (CPS) – as in many school districts – principals are responsible for implementing the district wellness policy at a school level. Now, increasing numbers of principals are recognizing the connection between student well-being and learning and are joining in efforts to make schools healthier places.

HSC has been gathering data and working with principal leaders through our Principals for Healthy Schools Project. A recent survey of CPS elementary school principals conducted as part of the project shows that many principals recognize the benefits of food and fitness in schools but face barriers to making changes.

When asked about the probable effects of improving physical activity at school, 95 percent of the principals who participated in the survey said that it would improve students’ attention; 65 percent said it would decrease absences; and 61 percent said that it would improve test scores.

Building on this interest, principals gathered at a recent HSC Lunch & Learn to hear from innovative colleagues who are finding creative ways to implement wellness programs and to discuss strategies for expanding those efforts. At the event, principals expressed growing energy, enthusiasm and commitment to moving forward with wellness initiatives at school.

Now, an advisory committee of principals commited to wellness is preparing to develop supports that can help principals throughout the district make healthy changes.

Stay posted for more news as this project progresses!

Save the Date: Green Clean Schools National Summit
Building coalitions to bring Green Clean Schools laws to every state

Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008
8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. with reception to follow
1800 Massachusetts Avenue, NW
Washington, DC

In 2006, the state of New York passed a law requiring green cleaning in schools. In 2007, Illinois passed a similar law. Now, activists in more than a dozen states are planning to introduce legislation requiring schools to protect the health of students and staff by implementing green cleaning programs.

Please join Healthy Schools Campaign and advocates from around the country for a special Green Clean Schools National Summit, building on this momentum to bring health-promoting green cleaning laws to every state in the nation.

The summit will bring together national organizations, corporate leaders, state-level activists and concerned individuals to develop state-specific strategies with lessons learned from previous successful efforts. Summit attendees will have the opportunity to learn about model legislation, see sample materials, discuss responses to common objections and get updates on policy and product development.

Perhaps most importantly, the summit will connect local activists and national organizations to build strong, effective state-level coalitions.

Are you an activist working to bring a Green Clean Schools law to your state? Please let us know so that we may connect you with other activists and organizations interested in supporting the effort. A limited number of scholarships are available to cover the cost of travel for non-profit advocates. Contact Mark Bishop at 312-419-1810.

Correction: Missouri Law Establishes Guidelines for Green Cleaning in Schools

Healthy Schools Campaign’s press release of July 11 reported that new legislation signed by Missouri Governor Matt Blunt established requirements for green cleaning in schools. In fact, the legislation establishes guidelines and recommendations for green cleaning.

“We’re excited to see states adopting policies on green cleaning in schools and applaud Missouri leaders for taking this step,” said HSC deputy director Mark Bishop. “Providing a clear definition of ‘green’ is an important part of helping schools make decisions that support the health of their students and staff. We’re looking forward to working with Missouri advocates to implement these guidelines in schools.”

HSC was instrumental in advocating for legislation requiring green cleaning in Illinois schools and is forming a coalition to provide strategy and support to state-level advocates working to create green clean schools legislation.

26.2 Miles of Motivation: Why I’m Running a Marathon for Healthy Schools Campaign | by Anne Honzel
I ran my first Chicago Marathon 20 years ago. 1988 was a milestone year. I got married, and ran my personal best marathon! Of course, I never considered that it would be my fastest marathon for all time. Throughout my twenties and then my thirties, I assumed I could run that 26.2 miles just a little faster. It’s amazing the perspective your forties bring. So, I traded in all those running hours for volunteer hours and have been active with the boys’ schools over the past few years. . . . Read more

Japan Fights Fat with Staff Wellness| by Rochelle Davis
Check out this story on CNN about efforts in Japan to address the problem of obesity. The government fines employers and charges them extra for health insurance if they go above a certain percentage of employees (or their family members) who are overweight. The employer featured in the segment pipes in exercise music twice a day, encourages employees to take the stairs with exercise stations at each landing and provides employees with healthy meals. . . . Older Students Given Fewer Healthy Food Choices| by Rochelle Davis
Policymakers in Illinois and across the country should take note of the article in the July edition of Pediatrics that reports on a study revealing how public middle and high schools offer far fewer healthy foods to their students than elementary schools do. The “less healthy” offerings available in high schools were found in a la carte cafeteria lines and in vending machines and snack bars. In addition, researchers found that less than 20 percent of the schools consistently offered students lunches containing less than 30 percent of calories from fat. . . . Read more

We Heard It ...

"This is pennies when you look at the long-term cost of treating diabetes or high cholesterol,"
- Audry Tayse Haynes of the YMCA, on a recent study showing that investing $10 per person in wellness and disease- prevention efforts could cut more than $16 billion annually from national healthcare costs, as quoted by the Associated Press
