Changing the future of school food and fitness means changing the opportunities we give all children to live healthy lives. That’s why Chicago Public Schools and Healthy Schools Campaign with the Illinois State Board of Education and USDA Midwest have joined together to help schools across the city Go for the Gold in food and fitness. First Lady Michelle Obama is calling upon schools to be a crucial partner in reversing the childhood obesity epidemic by meeting the high standards for food, physical activity and nutrition education set by the HealthierUS School Challenge. The Go for the Gold campaign is an initiative to help Chicago public schools reach this standard of excellence. To meet the challenge, schools will:
Chicago Public Schools has already taken the first step by adopting the HealthierUS gold standard for school meals. Chicago is the first major school district to declare new nutrition standards that meet and exceed the gold standard. Now we need the help of the entire city to support schools in meeting high standards for nutrition, food education and physical activity. Healthy kids are better learners. Making changes in the cafeteria and increasing opportunities for nutrition education and physical activity in the classroom and beyond will have significant impacts for children’s health and education.
