Good News for Green Schools in Obama’s Economic Stimulus Package
Funding for School Repairs Important for Student Health, Environmental Responsibility

The economic stimulus package proposed by president-elect Obama includes $25 billion to fund the building and repair of schools, highways and bridges – including repairs to make schools more energy-efficient.

Funding for school repairs is vitally important to student health and safety: the average U.S. school building is 42 years old and faces years of deferred maintenance, as funding has in many cases been unavailable to make even the repairs necessary to bring school buildings into compliance with minimum building codes.

Making these repairs can bring great gains for indoor air quality and student safety while improving the energy-efficiency of the buildings, saving school districts money in the long term. We look forward to learning more about how Obama’s proposed stimulus package will support school environmental health.

Plus: The American Federation of Teachers has released two new and very relevant reports: one on green buildings and one on the need for school infrastructure repair. Click here to check out the reports.

HSC Seeks Illinois Schools to Save Energy, Earn Money
Demand Response pilot program brings revenue to schools

Did you know that electricity grid operators are willing to pay schools to use less energy?

A recent federal mandate requires electricity grid operators to implement programs to manage the demand for electricity. In response to this mandate, grid operators have developed “demand response” programs in which they make regular payments to consumers – including schools – that volunteer to participate.

HSC is partnering with ClearChoice Energy to be sure that schools are able to take advantage of these easy-to-implement programs.

There is a very limited time for a small number of school districts to participate in this pilot project. To learn more, click here or contact Mark Bishop at 312-419-1810.

HSC Board Elects New President and Vice-President

The HSC Board of Directors has elected Dianne Campbell as president and Rob Rogers and Vice President. Dianne and Rob have been dedicated supporters of HSC’s work and bring a remarkable wealth of knowledge and expertise to their new leadership positions on the Board.

Dianne Campbell became involved with HSC through her work bringing fresh, healthy food to the flagship South Loop campus of Perspectives Charter Schools, now recognized nationally for making very healthy, very tasty food a key element of the school experience at all of its campuses. Since joining the Board, she’s been a leader in supporting strategic planning and growth for the organization. Now, Dianne serves as the founding executive director of Lincoln Park Village, a pioneering not-for-profit organization that provides resources to enable residents 50 and more to stay in their homes as they age and to build a vibrant, generational-friendly community.

Rob Rogers became involved with HSC through his work as vice president of School Health Corporation, the nation’s leading provider of medical supplies and equipment to schools and sports teams, a family business he runs with his wife Susan. Rob has been instrumental in the organization's school wellness initiatives and school nursing work, especially in developing The Quick & Easy Guide to School Wellness. Rob brought together a cadre of colleagues to join the HSC marathon team and has run both the Chicago and New York marathons for HSC.

Please join us in extending a very warm welcome to Dianne and Rob, and to all the new members of HSC's board.

Many thanks as well to Bess Celio, who has completed her term as President and to Joe Zanoni, who has completed his term as Vice President. Bess and Joe were both founding members of the HSC board and have made extraordinary contributions to the organization’s growth during their tenure. We extend our heartfelt appreciation for their dedication and leadership.

Program & Advocacy Updates

Fresh Voices for Fresh Choices
A healthier school lunch one story at a time

HSC brought together bloggers from around the U.S. on Dec. 10 to advocate for a healthy reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act through an online event called Fresh Voices for Fresh Choices.

We are proud to announce that 12 bloggers joined us to get the word out about our petition for healthier school lunches.

If you haven’t signed the petition yet, now is a great time to add your name. If you have, be sure to tell a friend! (Everyone who signs the petition receives a $1 coupon from Applegate Farms!) And if you’re a blogger who would like to get involved with HSC’s online advocacy around this important issue, be sure to contact Leena Trivedi-Grenier.

Each blogger posted her own take on school lunches, with entries ranging from fact-filled articles to favorite school lunch memories to healthy recipes that parents can make for their own kids. Check out the post on HSC’s blog about the event, which links to all of the bloggers who participated, including:

  • Susan over at Food Blogga shared her favorite school lunch memories along with her favorite healthy chili recipe, which happens to be great for lunch.
  • Debra at The Ethicurean wrote an informative post about how president-elect Obama can help extend a child’s life.
  • Chef Ann Cooper from Lunch Lessons outlined specific changes she urges for school lunches.
  • Amanda from What We’re Eating took a trip down memory lane, exploring the school lunch options available to her back in the day.
  • Michelle over at What’s Cooking blog kept it short and sweet, reminding us all about the obesity problem among today’s youth.

Stay posted for updates and more exciting Fresh Voices for Fresh Choices events.

Integrated Pest Management - With Falcons| by Mark Bishop
We talk about Integrated Pest Management a lot here at HSC, learning about ways to control pests without using toxic pesticides. But it’s not often that I get to comment on interesting pest control stories, so this comes to me with great joy. Ecolab UK has launched a pest control program for birds (the pests in this case are pigeons) that uses trained falcons. Now I’m not an expert on pigeon control, but the thought of sending trained falcons to scare pigeons from schools brings a smile to my face. And it’s a strategy that has actually been employed successfully in other parts of the UK.

Eating Local & Healthy, Even After the First Frost| by Lindsay Muscato
Recently I read Barbara Kingsolver’s Animal, Vegetable, Miracle for the first time. Her book chronicles her family's attempt to grow most of their own food for a full year, and it's also a wake-up call about America’s factory-like system of food production. After just a few chapters, I was hooked on the idea of eating local and organic whenever possible. But it was twenty degrees outside. The season of fresh-picked strawberries and homegrown watermelon has already passed me by. What’s a gal to eat in late November that’s local and organic? .

Fundraising Gets Healthy | by Kari Lydersen
A growing number of schools and parent groups nationwide are eschewing the junk food and turning to healthy fundraisers, selling do-it-yourself art projects or environmentally friendly light bulbs; collecting recyclable computer cartridges or old cell phones; or even pledging for kids to move their bodies in the popular Dance Dance Revolution game. These projects not only raise money but have added benefits for health, education, the environment and kids’ self-esteem..   .

Five Reasons to Raise Your Voice for Healthy School Food| by Tara Kennon
Today is the day we’re launching Fresh Voices for Fresh Choices, an online event with bloggers from around the country posting about school food and linking their readers to HSC’s petition urging President-elect Obama to make a healthy reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act a priority for his administration. Why is it so important to lend your voice healthy school food right now? The reasons are countless – but here are five of them. .

We Heard It ...

"There are health and safety standards for adults in the workplace, but there are no standards for children at schools. If a parent complains, there's no law that requires anybody to do anything. It's beyond belief."
- Ramona Trovato, former director of the EPA's Office of Children's Health Protection, on high levels of polluted air around elementary schools, as quoted in USA Today
