Teachers, nurses and other school leaders gathered recently for training that prepared them to share messages about healthy classroom management.
This training provided time-tested tools and techniques for creating a classroom environment that supports healthy lifestyles. For example, the session addressed methods for integrating physical activity into the classroom, providing healthy rewards, and hosting healthy classroom celebrations. The program included a presentation by Sandy Noel, a Golden Apple Award-winning teacher with a strong commitment to promoting wellness through healthy classroom management practices. Gary Cuneen, executive director of Seven Generations Ahead, shared tips on how to take these messages back to others at the school.
Attendees also discussed ideas for healthy snacks, constructive classroom rewards, healthy fundraising and more as outlined in the bonus tip sheets of HSC’s Quick & Easy Guide to School Wellness. Click here to access the bonus tip sheets and check out the Quick & Easy Guide.
“Every day, teachers have the opportunity to model healthy behavior and create classroom environments that support wellness,” said HSC school wellness director Jean Saunders. This training – and other programs like it – position teachers to share resources and support each others’ efforts to keep children healthy and focused on learning.
The upcoming reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act includes the opportunity to increase resources for teacher professional development related to wellness in school. You can join HSC in voicing your support for school wellness by adding your name to HSC's petition for a strong reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act.
