Training Program Promotes Healthy Classrooms
Training prepares teachers to spread healthy classroom management messages
Training participants practice methods for integrating physical activity into the classroom

Teachers, nurses and other school leaders gathered recently for training that prepared them to share messages about healthy classroom management.

This training provided time-tested tools and techniques for creating a classroom environment that supports healthy lifestyles. For example, the session addressed methods for integrating physical activity into the classroom, providing healthy rewards, and hosting healthy classroom celebrations. The program included a presentation by Sandy Noel, a Golden Apple Award-winning teacher with a strong commitment to promoting wellness through healthy classroom management practices. Gary Cuneen, executive director of Seven Generations Ahead, shared tips on how to take these messages back to others at the school.

Attendees also discussed ideas for healthy snacks, constructive classroom rewards, healthy fundraising and more as outlined in the bonus tip sheets of HSC’s Quick & Easy Guide to School Wellness. Click here to access the bonus tip sheets and check out the Quick & Easy Guide.

“Every day, teachers have the opportunity to model healthy behavior and create classroom environments that support wellness,” said HSC school wellness director Jean Saunders. This training – and other programs like it – position teachers to share resources and support each others’ efforts to keep children healthy and focused on learning.

The upcoming reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act includes the opportunity to increase resources for teacher professional development related to wellness in school. You can join HSC in voicing your support for school wellness by adding your name to HSC's petition for a strong reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act.

HSC Releases National Policy Recommendations
Lesson 3: Physical activity supports student health and helps students focus on learning.

Recess at Blaine School, November 2006

One of the greatest challenges facing our national leaders is to provide a high-quality education and healthy environment for all students. As President Obama and Secretary of Education Duncan bring the lessons they’ve learned in Chicago to the national education dialogue, leaders in health and education are looking to Chicago schools for lessons that may shape national policy.

HSC is pleased to share some of these lessons and national policy recommendations in our new report, Healthy and Ready to Learn: Lessons from Chicago. The report tells the stories of people whose efforts have made schools healthier places and outlines the specific ways our national leaders can take action.

This week, we’ll highlight the third lesson:

Lesson 3: Physical activity supports student health and helps students focus on learning.

“The kids feel more energized and the incentive created by recess has led to improved behavior among the students,” said Principal Luis Soria. “I think the element of unstructured play is really important to child development. It gives kids a chance to gain experience in collaborating and compromising, which are necessary later in life in college and careers.” Numerous studies demonstrate that breaks during the school day improve focus and the brain’s ability to encode information, the basis of building knowledge. A Happy, Heartwarming 'Vern Day' for One School's Custodian| by Mark Bishop
When did you hear your last heartwarming story about a beloved school custodian? It’s been awhile, but I’ll remember this story for some time: "Like a king carrying his scepter, (Vern) Ratchman doled out high-fives, autographs and hugs as 700 members of the Highlands/Odyssey school community lined the hallways, raised marshmallow-topped pretzel sticks in salute and chanted 'Stick with Vern.' 'Vern is that special to us,' said Principal Val Dreier of the celebration. 'He's a remarkable presence here and has made such an enormous difference in the climate of our school.'" . . . Read more

Asthma and Indoor Air: Using Research, Making Changes at Home and School| by Mark Bishop
It amazes me that research documenting the link between indoor environments and asthma is still newsworthy. While I understand the importance of conducting credible research on the effects of indoor air, the linkage between indoor environments and health problems such as asthma has been known for years. I started working in the field 15 years ago, and back then, the question wasn’t “how do we get more research?” but rather “how do we make change?” Last week’s Baltimore Sun published a great article about efforts to make improvements in the indoor environments in urban homes. . . . Featured School Food Memory: Food of the Future| by Mark Bishop
The latest school food memory du jour shared in our Fresh Voices for Fresh Choices contest made me think of a recent NPR story about astronaut food. Bob Edwards interviewed NASA Food Scientist Michelle Perchonok and discussed the evolving state of freeze dried food. While the critiques of the vacuum packed beef stew were less than stellar (and quite hilarious) it made me think of this school food story that was submitted by Erin Crouch: I grew up in the villages of Alaska in the 1980s, where my parents were teachers. We moved from community to community, staying a year or two in each . . . Read more

We Heard It ...

"Most of the changes that have occurred in body fat tend to occur from being in an environment that promotes very easy access to high-caloric foods and limited opportunities for physical activities."
- Dr. Tom Robinson, director of the Center for Healthy Weight at the Stanford University School of Medicine, on new research showing that one in five American 4-year-olds is obese, as quoted at CNN.com
