Parents Celebrate Environmental Justice Successes

Parents and grandparents from Chicago’s Austin community gathered last week to celebrate the accomplishments of the Austin Environmental Health and Justice Project coordinated by HSC and COFI (Community Organizing and Family Issues) with the Austin Wide Parent Network.

For the last two years, 12 parents from this low-income African-American community worked with HSC staff to learn about the connection between learning, health and the school environment and then work together to make improvements in four schools. Through the project, parents were able to bring together teachers, administrators, custodians, nurses, and students to make schools healthier places for the community’s children. Parents also developed a learning tool, “Grandma Goes Green,” to spread messages about environmental health with peers and community leaders.

Parents explained that they decided to work on the project because of the tremendous health disparities and growing rates of childhood asthma that African-American communities such as Austin face. (The number of children suffering from asthma in Chicago’s African-American communities is more than double the national average.) Parents were also concerned over the health hazards that exist in older school buildings.

“Parents are the most invested people in a child’s life,” said Guillermo Gomez, HSC Chicago Director. “In this project we’ve seen their commitment and dedication in creating healthier environments at their local schools. The remarkable work they are doing will make a real difference for children’s health and provides a model for other parents striving to take action. ”

Gomez explained that the environmental justice work will continue even though the program is concluding. HSC’s intent was to bring knowledge about asthma triggers at schools and how these triggers affected children, and to empower parents to create change. Parents have begun to integrate these lessons into decisions at home and in other buildings throughout the neighborhood.

At the celebration hosted by COFI and HSC’s African-American Advisory Taskforce, representatives from other leading organizations including Power-Pac, Oprah’s Angel Network, Real Men Cook, and the University of Chicago, Power-Pac, came together to hear parent testimonials and celebrate their successes.

HSC Releases National Policy Recommendations
Lesson 4: School nurses are important for promoting student health.

Chicago school nurse leaders, Oct. 2008

One of the greatest challenges facing our national leaders is to provide a high-quality education and healthy environment for all students. As President Obama and Secretary of Education Duncan bring the lessons they’ve learned in Chicago to the national education dialogue, leaders in health and education are looking to Chicago schools for lessons that may shape national policy.

HSC is pleased to share some of these lessons and national policy recommendations in our new report, Healthy and Ready to Learn: Lessons from Chicago. The report tells the stories of people whose efforts have made schools healthier places and outlines the specific ways our national leaders can take action.

This week, we’ll highlight the fourth lesson:

Lesson 4: School nurses are important for promoting student health.

Perhaps more than anyone, school nurses understand how the school environment shapes children’s health, and how children’s health shapes their ability to succeed at school.Supporting school nurse leadership can lead to important gains for student health and for the entire school community. HSC asks that legislators make a series of changes to rules and resource allocations that will allow school nurses to make the greatest possible impact in their efforts to promote student health. School Nurses Speak Up for Health at Advocacy Day

School nurse advocates

Healthy Schools Campaign and the Illinois Association of School Nurses hosted the third annual School Nurse Advocacy Day last week, bringing more than 30 school nurses from across the state came together to raise their voices for school health.

This year, School Nurse Advocacy Day was arranged around two specific issues: The creation of a state school nurse consultant position at the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), and the currently proposed House Joint Resolution 46, which would create a taskforce to study the delivery of school health services.

The advocacy day included training on how to effectively engage with legislators as well as an opportunity to meet with legislative staffers and representatives of the Illinois State Board of Education, raising awareness not only of the issues but of the valuable role school nurses can play as resources for our elected leaders concerned with the health of students and school staff.

Aunt Jimmy’s Pear Crisp| by Gale Gand
My Aunt Jimmy (her real name was Sylvia) from my mother’s side of the family brought apple crisp into the family’s repertoire. In my mom’s recipe file, her name adorns the top of the card. I, of course, needed so make it my own by using pears. My mother always taught me to be independent. Anjou or Bartlett pears are my favorite to use for this dessert. . . Read more

The Roots of Your Mac 'n' Cheese Craving: Food Memories Influence Taste| by Mark Bishop
As an adult, I have wondered how childhood food memories affect our adult tastes. Did my mom's love of smelly cheeses grow my blue cheese affection, or would that have happened on its own? How much of my current love for lamb, olives, and an occasional street tamale have any reflection of my suburban upbringing? I have no idea, but a recent survey shows a connection between our memories of food and our adult tastes. . Read more

EPA to Recommend Green Claims for Disinfectants and Sanitizers | by Mark Bishop
One of the biggest challenges in a green cleaning program is how to properly disinfect and sanitize. The EPA requires registration for all sanitizers/disinfectants with their office of pesticides and does not allow the use of environmentally preferable claims. This has lead to confusion on how to identify preferable options.
This is all changing. . . . . Read more

What Henry Eats: Passover Edition| by Mark Bishop
My wife and I have a slight disagreement about the proper way to make Matzah Brei - a dish that Jews eat during passover. While trying to Google my way to winning this argument, I learned you can make matzah brei sweet, savory, with salsa, cheese, or just about any way. I also learned that many people get very passionate about their matzah brei. Well, I decided that this year, Henry is going to learn how I make it . . . Read more

Taking Strides With Safe, Healthy Routes to School | by Tara Kennon
The Robert Wood Johnson foundation recently released the 2009 Safe Routes to School report, which concisely explains the movement for active routes to school: “In 1969, half of all students walked or bicycled to school. In 2001, just 15 percent of children did.”
Children’s opportunity to walk or bike to school touches very directly on HSC’s two key focus areas – school wellness and environmental health – raising questions about both physical activity and sustainability. . . . Read more

A Hot Debate Over School Lunches in Madison| by Lindsay Muscato
In a recent story in The Capital Times, a local newspaper in Madison, Wisc., parents and school officials debate the real meaning of a "healthy" school lunch. Parents have noticed that the menu seems heavy on processed and pre-packaged foods, and kids spend as much time in the lunch line as at the lunch table. At the same time, parent-led initiatives to include fresh, locally grown ingredients have yet to take off, in part because the school says these initiatives fail to recognize the time and resources necessary to make the ingredients a part of school meals. . . .
