Raise Your Hand: What Do You Want to Ask the EPA About Environmental Health in Schools?

On Fri. July 31, HSC will welcome Administrator Lisa Jackson, head of the EPA, to a breakfast forum here in Chicago. We’re excited to hear Administrator Jackson’s thoughts on the role of the EPA in making sure school environments are safe and healthy. We’re also looking forward to hearing her perspective on the role of schools in our nation’s sustainability efforts.

But now we want to know: What do you want to ask Administrator Jackson about environmental health in schools?

This is such an important and far-reaching topic –- it encompasses everything from asthma and air quality to green building (and quite a bit in between) –- that we’re interested in hearing what issues are most important to you.

Please take a moment to share your questions, on the HSC blog or on Facebook.

Administrator Jackson will be joined by Kate Tomford, Director of Sustainability for Illinois Governor Pat Quinn; Suzanne Carlson, Director of Environmental Affairs for Chicago Public Schools; and Bill Balek, Government Affairs Director for ISSA. The forum will be followed by a tour of Tarkington School of Excellence, Chicago's first LEED-certified green school.

If you’re in the area and would like to attend the forum, click here for an invitation. If not, stay posted for updates and video from the event!

This event is generously underwritten by The Crown Family.

Green Clean Schools National Summit

Concerned about healthy and clean schools for students and staff? Concerned about the environment? What to be part of a national movement to promote green cleaning in schools? Then join industry leaders, national school stakeholder groups and non-profit advocates on September 15, 2009 for the Second Annual Green Clean Schools National Summit in Washington DC.

The agenda will include:

  • Reporting on green clean state legislation activity during 2009.
  • Providing input into guiding principals for model green clean state legislation.
  • Identifying the best opportunities for moving legislation in 2010.
  • Networking with others interested in promoting green cleaning.

In anticipation of the summit, HSC is also developing a set of guiding principles for green clean schools legislation. To learn more about how your organization can get involved and sign on to this set of principles, please contact Mark Bishop at 312-419-1810.

Run for Healthy Schools!
HSC team welcomes new runners

HSC's charity athletics team is gearing up for the Bank of America Chicago Marathonand ING New York City Marathon! As part of the team, runners make a difference for children’s health and well-being while competing in a world-class athletic event.

To learn more, be sure to visit HSC’s marathon website or contact Alicea Miller at 312-419-1810.

Who is running for HSC? Runners from around the country are making a difference for healthy schools! In this newsletter, we'll introduce another member of our team:

Elena Marre
Running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon

"After running my first marathon in 2001, I swore I would never run one again. A friend of mine sweet-talked me (over a glass of wine) into running it with her last year. And now I'm hooked!

I feel that a healthful and well-rounded diet is essential to physical and emotional health. Given the obesity epidemic this country is facing, it is imperative that we educate people about what it means to eat healthy and why it's so important, and make it an attainable goal in their day-to-day lives. And there's no better place to start than the schools.

I founded The Kids' Table, and we teach hands-on cooking classes for kids and parents, with the mission of making healthy food fun for all ages. Working with Healthy Schools Campaign is a way for me to play a small part in serving our broader community."

Parents United for Healthy Schools Announces 2009 Parent Training

Physical activity break at 2008 parent training

Parent leaders in HSC’s Parents United for Healthy Schools coalition have announced the 2009 parent training series for August. This intensive two-week series provides parent leaders in Chicago’s Latino and African-American communities with the knowledge and skills to establish and effectively maintain school wellness teams, offering knowledge of food and fitness as well as strategies for organizing groups and facilitating school-level changes. The training also includes visits from elected leaders and school officials.

Past graduates of the training have taken great strides in their schools, working with principals and other school leaders to increase access to physical activity and healthy food.

HSC Envisions The Road to a Healthier Future| by Rochelle Davis
I recently picked up my 25-year-old niece, Julia, from O’Hare airport. Julia has been in Spain for the last 10 months teaching English as a second language. Julia had spent the month of June walking El Camino, a famous Christian pilgrimage walk through Spain. Of course, I was interested in how she ate while on the walk. . . . Read more

To the Garden!| by Mark Bishop
For months, Henry's favorite video was this little YouTube gem, To the Garden, (WARNING - If you don't have kids, you will find yourself throwing a brick at your computer after watching this video) so we were excited this summer to start planting our garden with Henry. It's starting to pay off . . . Read more

Fighting Childhood Obesity & Malnutrition | by Rochelle Davis
The federal food program began more than 60 years ago to address the fact that so many children were underweight and malnourished. The crisis facing us today is both the same and different: now children are overweight and malnourished. In a recent article, Dr. Cyril O. Enwonwu does an excellent job of explaining this contradiction of our modern age. Take a 14-year-old African-American boy living in Baltimore. . . Now take a 14-year-old boy from Nigeria . . . . How Universal Meals Could Revolutionize School Food | by Jean Saunders
Currently, 10 percent of the federal reimbursement for school lunches goes toward administration and oversight of the program. If this amount is reduced – by, say, increasing efficiency and reducing the amount of paperwork - school food directors could spend more of that money on higher quality, nutritious food. Fortunately, several bills have been introduced to address this very issue. . . . Read more

Summer Recipe & Cookbook Review: Super Natural Cooking by Heidi Swanson| by Lindsay Muscato
For healthy, delicious recipes, Heidi Swanson is my go-to favorite. Her printed compilation of winning dishes is Super Natural Cooking, and her regularly updated blog is 101 Cookbooks. Heidi began the blog in order to dust off all the cookbooks she'd accumulated. Over time, she has developed her own style and expert voice, plus she includes lush photography of each dish. For a summertime Kool-Aid alternative, try this refreshing drink, especially at a picnic where pink-stained mouths and fingers are already part of the routine. . . . Read more

Nutrition Facts on Restaurant Menus Could Help Kids Make Healthy Choices | by Jean Saunders
A new bill in the Senate would make tallying up nutrition info for your restaurant meal even more straightforward than calculating the tip. A national menu labeling provision would require restaurant chains with 20 or more outlets to post calories on menus. HSC believes that the menu labeling requirements would help to make nutrition education in schools more actionable: students would be better able to make informed food choices when they purchase food away from school. . . . Congratulations to Chuck Ainsworth at PortionPac: Connecting School Food & Green Cleaning | by Lindsay Muscato

Report Gives U.S. Low Marks for High Obesity Rates | by Jean Saunders
Washington lawmakers may be taking a break from their work in reforming our nation’s health care system, but a new report focuses on another vital component of national health: obesity trends. In addition to sharing alarming statistics on obesity in both adults and children, the report provides recommendations for further action: I was especially interested to see that the report points out the importance of the school environment in addressing childhood obesity. . . . Floor Mats Help Schools Go Green, from the Ground Up | by Cynthia San Miguel
The Andersen Company, a manufacturer of eco-friendly floor mats, is a green team supporter of HSC’s Quick & Easy Guide to Green Cleaning in Schools. (Mats, especially at building entrances, can play an important role in school green cleaning programs by trapping dirt before it even enters the building.) The company uses recycled rubber and post consumer fabrics in its Eco-Premier line and established the Green MATters committee, which finds eco-friendly ways to conduct business . . . . Read more
