Principals, Parents Gather for School Wellness
Parent leaders from West Town schools with Enrique Rodriquez, anchor/reporter for Univision News and member of HSC’s board of directors

More than 250 parents, principals, school nurses and advocates gathered Feb. 27 for the third annual Principals Breakfast for School Wellness hosted by Parents United for Healthy Schools/Padres Unidos para Escuelas Saludables, an HSC-led coalition of more than 40 parent and community groups in Chicago.

The event offered an opportunity for principals to connect and share strategies for making healthy eating and physical activity part of the school day.

“When it comes to wellness, we’re all working toward the same goal -- healthy children who are prepared to succeed,”  said Guillermo Gomez, HSC’s Chicago director. “We are glad that principals and parents are working together through school wellness teams and events such as this breakfast, sharing strategies and creating healthy environments.”

Speakers provided information about resources available to schools including a universal breakfast program, professional development on classroom management strategies, and the availability of the OrganWise Guys nutrition education program at no cost to schools. (For more information about these resources, please contact Guillermo Gomez.)

Parent leaders also presented the Leadership Award in Combating Childhood Obesity to schools selected for their accomplishments in promoting healthy food and fitness:

  • Greene School
  • McAuliffe School
  • McCormick School
  • Otis School
  • Perez School

The event was emceed by Univision anchor Enrique Rodriguez, a new member of HSC's board of directors. Clarisol Duque of Sen. Dick Durbin’s Chicago office congratulated the winning schools and offered commendation to all the parent leaders who are working to make healthy eating and physical activity the norm at school.

HSC Releases National Policy Recommendations
Lesson 1: Healthy School Environments Support Learning

One of the greatest challenges facing our national leaders is to provide a high-quality education and healthy environment for all students. As President Obama and Secretary of Education Duncan bring the lessons they’ve learned in Chicago to the national education dialogue, leaders in health and education are looking to Chicago schools for lessons that may shape national policy.

HSC is pleased to share some of these lessons and national policy recommendations in our new report, Healthy and Ready to Learn: Lessons from Chicago. The report tells the stories of people whose efforts have made schools healthier places and outlines the specific ways our national leaders can take action.

This week, we’ll highlight the first lesson:

Lesson 1: Healthy school environments support learning.

One of the most powerful lessons that has emerged from Chicago schools in recent years is that healthy high-performing "green" school environments support learning in addition to reducing operating costs and protecting the environment. Green building attributes offer benefits in building renovations as well as in new construction. Continue reading . . .

X-Ray Vision Carrots: Study Shows Kids Like Veggies with Funny Names| by Mark Bishop
New research shows that kids like veggies with super hero powers! According to a recent MSNBC article: In a new study, 186 4-year-olds were given regular carrots and, on other lunch days, they were given the same vegetables renamed X-ray Vision Carrots. On the latter days, they ate nearly twice as many. Children continued to eat about 50 percent more carrots even on the days when they were no longer labeled as anything special. . . . Read more

A "New Day" for School Food: Talking with Sec. of Agriculture Tom Vilsack| by Rochelle Davis
The USDA plays a major role in shaping our nation’s school food, so I was happy to see this recent Washington Post interview with Tom Vilsack, the new Secretary of Agriculture. In the interview, Secretary Vilsack declares that “there’s a new day here” and that he is committed to pursuing policies that support healthful eating – including healthy food at school. Vilsack discusses his own struggle with weight as a child and says that “there are ways in which we can partner with local school districts and states to do a better job to provide nutrition options at school.” . . . The Food Lobby Goes to School| by Jean Saunders
Greenstreet has recently created a short film, “The Food Lobby Goes to School, ” that is generating buzz online about the politics of school food. In this short piece, Steven profiles a recent meeting of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) where health advocates and industry lobbyists presented their positions on school food to IOM scientists. Greenstreet points out that with more than $10 billion per year at stake, representatives from all parts of the food industry will be working hard over the next few months to encourage the adoption of standards that would keep – or bring – their particular food in schools. . . . The Most Important Meal of the Day| by Jean Saunders
Mom was right, breakfast is the most important meal of the day! The School Nutrition Association (SNA) has designated this week as National School Breakfast Week. At schools across the country, food service directors will encourage students to participate in school breakfast programs. I thought this was a good day to take mom’s advice to heart and make a healthy breakfast of oatmeal. . . . Read more

What Henry Eats: Spinach Tacos| by Mark Bishop
This post is part of our new Friday-morning series on the fun, healthy snacks that kids love. In my house, these are called Spinach Tacos: take one piece of fresh spinach, add a blob of hummus, and then let the kid drop a few raisins in the middle. It’s a delicious snack. And it’s sure to make your heart swell with pride and you see your kid pounding fresh spinach with this kind of enthusiasm. . . . Read more

Kitchens, Funding & Fresh Meals: Alice Waters Discusses School Food Reform| by Jean Saunders
In a New York Times editorial on Friday, Alice Waters, renowned chef and president of the Chez Panisse Foundation, reminds us that, "Every public school child in America deserves a healthful and delicious lunch that is prepared with fresh ingredients." Waters calls for a major overhaul of the National School Lunch Program so that all schools can serve meals that are cooked from scratch in a well-designed and fully functioning kitchen. . . .
