HSC Shares Lessons at National Food Policy Conferences
Experiences Creating Change in Chicago Inform National Policy Dialogue

Students preview healthy new school food menus in Chicago

This week, HSC brought lessons from the effort to transform food and fitness in Chicago schools to advocates and policymakers nationwide.

HSC deputy director Mark Bishop shared the stage with Janey Thornton, USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services, and other national leaders for a discussion of strategies for making healthy food choices easier for the next generation. The presentation was part of the 2010 National Nutrition Summit hosted by the US Department of Health and Human Services and the USDA.
Workshop at W.K. Kellogg Food & Society Conference

At the W. K. Kellogg Foundation's 2010 Food and Society Conference, HSC's Rochelle Davis, Guillermo Gomez and Rosa Ramirez led a workshop on community based strategies for promoting wellness using a social justice framework.

HSC’s efforts to bring healthy food and physical activity to Chicago schoolchildren have gained new momentum with the excitement of recent changes built on years of organizing to build a strong foundation of support for wellness in schools. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) recently announced that all school meals will meet or exceed the nutritional gold standard of the HealthierUS School Challenge and HSC is partnering with CPS, the USDA Midwest and the Illinois State Board of Education to help schools meet health-promoting criteria for physical activity and nutrition education as well as school food. CPS also recently announced a taskforce to help bring recess back to the many schools where it is not offered. A healthy school meal created by Chicago students for HSC’s Cooking up Change healthy cooking contest has been served to more than 20,000 students in high schools across Chicago; through Cooking up Change, student-designed meals are shaping the menu across the district.

Senate & House Need Input on Child Nutrition Bill
Tell Congress: Schools Need More Money for Better Food

Both the US Senate and the House of Representatives have begun work on the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act, the legislation that determines school food policy and resources for the next five years.

Last month in the Senate, the agricultural Committee approved The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 proposed by committee chair Sen. Blanche Lincoln, a bill that includes some health-promoting policy provisions but does not include sufficient funding for healthier school food. The funding currently proposed in the Senate is less than half of that proposed by President Obama and barely enough to acknowledge rising food costs, much less improve quality or expand access. In the House, Representatives James McGovern and Jo Ann Emerson are taking the lead on a Dear Colleague letter to Nancy Pelosi to ask that the bill is fully funded.

Now, we need Congress to hear from advocates across the US that increased funding for better school food must be a priority.

Please take a moment to send a letter asking your senators and representatives to provide adequate funding for schools to provide the healthful meals that support children’s health and learning.

Thank you for being part of this important and timely effort for children’s health.

HSC Participates in White House Task Force Meeting to Address Childhood Obesity | by Rochelle Davis
On April 9, I had the honor of participating in a White House meeting hosted by the Interagency Taskforce to Prevent Childhood Obesity. It was such an honor to be included in this group. The summit felt very much like a working session, and it was valuable to hear the national leaders who are shaping policy around school and community-based solutions discuss many of the issues that we work on here at HSC. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said he is a "big fan" of recess, and Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Kathleen Merrigan talked about the paradoxical connection between obesity and hunger. . . . Q&A with Dr. Dora Hughes, Senior Policy Advisor to the Secretary of Health and Human Services | by Tara Kennon
Earlier this month, HSC Founding Executive Director Rochelle Davis participated in a a White House meeting hosted by the Interagency Taskforce to Prevent Childhood Obesity. Also in attendance was Dr. Dora Hughes, Senior Policy Advisor to the Secretary of Health and Human Services. In May 2009, we had the opportunity to interview Hughes about her role, her vision for schools and the importance of promoting a healthy, active lifestyle. Much has happened since then -- including the launch of Let's Move -- but her thoughtful remarks continue to provide relevant insight into the important role schools can play in our nation's wellness efforts. . . . Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution: What's Next? (or: Are You Angry?) | by Mark Bishop
I've now watched the full season of Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, and I must admit that the show mesmerized me. Yes, it is reality TV. But fundamentally, Jamie educated, motivated and possibly angered millions (or at least 519,000 at the last count) of people about the condition and importance of school food. The show also left many people mad at the UDSA for providing schools with unhealthy food. However, I was left a bit angry in a different way. . . Read more

School Nurse Advocacy Day 2010 | by Laura Fillenwarth
On April 15, eleven school nurses from across Illinois traveled with two HSC staff members to Springfield, IL to meet with their Senators and Representatives and advocate for healthy school environments. School nurses are key advocates for school change and can play an important role in health promotion. School nurses have a unique understanding of the school environment, and can be catalysts of change for a healthier school environment by sharing their experiences with elected officials. . . . Boys Night Recipe: Quick & Easy Pan-Fried Tilapia | by Mark Bishop
Sometimes you need a quick dinner but still want a home-cooked meal. My wife pulled some tilapia out of the freezer the other day; when she had to work late, Henry, the defrosted tilapia and I had the place to ourselves. Here's what happened: baseball in the backyard, a bit of running around in the park, and then a return home to cook dinner together for the two of us. Boys night was on.. . . Read more

Cooking Up Healthy, Kid-Friendly Foods the Jamie Oliver Way | by Mark Bishop
Last week's episode of Jamie's Food Revolution addressed a question about getting kids to eat healthy food. Do you give them the best healthiest "adult" food possible -- things that I would want to eat -- or do we take kid-friendly food and make it as healthy possible? This is a passionate issue in schools. Jamie's answer was simple: Let's do both. And I agree . . . Read More

We Heard It ...

"It’s sort of like brushing your teeth — we wouldn’t wait to teach kids how important it is to brush their teeth,"
- Dolly Lambdin, clinical professor at the University of Texas at Austin, on helping elementary students develop healthy fitness habits, as quoted in the State Press
