Healthy Schools Campaign Announces Launch of Go for the Gold Campaign with Chicago Public Schools
Chicago responds to First Lady Michelle Obama’s Challenge to Reverse Trend in Childhood Obesity

Audrey Rowe, USDA Deputy Administrator for Special Nutrition Projects, speaks at the Go for the Gold launch. Rowe called the effort a "national model."

On Aug. 17, HSC announced the launch of the Go for the Gold campaign, a partnership of HSC, Chicago Public Schools (CPS), the USDA Midwest and the Illinois State Board of Education Dept of Nutrition. Go for the Gold will support Chicago public schools in meeting the high standards for food, fitness and nutrition education set by the HealthierUS School Challenge, the program First Lady Michelle Obama is promoting in the effort to reverse the trend in childhood obesity.

"Chicago is a national model," said Audrey Rowe, USDA Deputy Administrator for Special Nutrition Projects, at the launch. Rowe visited Chicago to meet with students and learn about the city’s response to the First Lady’s challenge.

The campaign builds on the new nutrition standards for school food that CPS announced in April 2010. The new standards meet and in many cases exceed the gold standard of the HealthierUS School Challenge. The challenge includes standards for school food, physical activity, physical education and nutrition education.

“It’s exciting to see parents, business leaders, chefs, school nurses and so many others from across the city come together in this effort to provide healthy school environments,” said HSC founding executive director Rochelle Davis.

Go for the Gold includes a civic and business advisory committee co-chaired by Karen Atwood, president of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, and Terry Mazany, President/CEO of The Chicago Community Trust, to encourage the emergence of city-wide support for a school environment that promotes healthy eating and physical activity for all children.

“The ambition and dedication behind Go for the Gold are truly remarkable,” said Ollice Holden, Midwest Re

gional Administrator, USDA/FNS. “This is truly the on-the-ground embodiment of the First Lady’s vision for our children’s future.”

Student chefs prepare for Cooking up Change Chicago

2010 has already been an exciting year for Cooking up Change! One More Reminder that Green Cleaning Matters: Cancer Panel's Report Notes the Effects of Toxins on Children | by Lindsay Muscato
As we prepare to release the next edition of our Quick & Easy Guide to Green Cleaning in Schools, we're taking a moment to highlight a recent report that underscores a message worth repeating: reducing chemical exposures matters, especially for kids. Earlier this year, President Obama's Cancer Panel released Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk: What We Can Do Now. The 240-page report [PDF] reinforces what many know -- that children are especially vulnerable to environmental contaminants and should be protected. . . . Read more

We recently wrapped up the Parents United for Healthy Schools/Padres Unidos para Escuelas Saludables 2010 Parent Leadership Institute. The first three sessions informed parents about nutrition and health disparities before equipping them to be leaders and advocates at their schools. Liz Isaacs, a mother and a chef, was a first-time attendee of a Healthy Schools Campaign parent training. Liz said: “This training was very enlightening. I have new knowledge of how much support I have. I never realized that there was such a big support network to help kids become healthy." . . . Read more

Child Nutrition Act - A Game Changer? | by Mark Bishop
The Senate has unanimously passed the Child Nutrition Act. The bill would partially fulfill President Obama’s request for $10 billion in additional funding for child nutrition program by providing $4.5 billion over the next decade. The bill will now move on to the House where it will need to pass by September 30, before the current program expires. These are all positive and important changes. And all in all, this will allow for greater access to healthier food for children. But let’s not lose perspective. This bill is good, but not a game changer. . . . Read more
