Ready, Set, Whisk! Cooking up Change National Contest Opens to High School & College Students

HSC is proud to announce that we´re teaming up with the National Farm to School Network to create a national version of our signature event, Cooking Up Change!

Teams of high school and college students are invited to design their own versions of a healthy school lunch: a meal that tastes great, meets high nutrition standards, and incorporates at least one locally-produced item.

Teams will enter online in a qualifying round of competition, and six teams chosen from this national pool of applicants will compete in the finals in May 2010 at Taking Root, the 5th National Farm to Cafeteria conference in Detroit, Michigan.

We´re also thrilled to welcome Karen Duncan, wife of Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, and Christie Vilsack, wife of Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, as National Honorary Co-Chairs of Cooking up Change 2010!

Please join us in making this exciting new event a success!

  • Help invite high school and college students to participate! We welcome teams of students to show off their culinary chops on our national stage. To learn more about forming a team, click here.
  • Help spread the word! Send an email to your network, Tweet about Cooking up Change, mention it in your Facebook status, add a badge to your blog or website, or simply mention it at a meeting. For tips, badges, flyers and other materials to help spread the word, click here.

In addition to spotlighting remarkable student talent, Cooking up Change brings attention to the challenges of serving fresh, healthy school food and the need for reform in our school food system. This focus is especially important and timely as Congress prepares to consider the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act and leaders across the US respond to first lady Michelle Obama’s call to action to end childhood obesity in a generation -- especially her focus on school food.

HSC will host our annual flagship Cooking up Change culinary competition in Chicago on Nov. 4, 2010. Save the date!

Tilden Students to Bring Cooking up Change Lunch to Congress

Student chefs present their award-winning jalapeno cornbread on Jan. 29, the day their meal was served in Chicago high schools

The student chefs of Tilden Career Community Academy High School will bring the healthy, great-tasting school lunch they designed – which won first place at HSC’s Cooking up Change healthy cooking contest – to Congress on March 2.

The students will showcase their meal at a Capitol Hill briefing on the future of school food where HSC’s founding executive director Rochelle Davis will moderate a panel of speakers including:

  • Christie Vilsack, National honorary co-chair of Cooking up Change and wife of Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack
  • Karen Duncan, National honorary co-chair of Cooking up Change and wife of Secretary of Education Arne Duncan
  • Tilden High School culinary student from the Cooking up Change winning team

The tasty lunch of chicken-vegetable jambalaya with jalapeno cornbread and cucumber salad will be served that day at the Longworth cafeteria in the House of Representatives office building. The healthy student-designed lunch is part of HSC's advocacy for a strong reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act.

Look out next week for more details about how you can take action for school food on March 2!

HSC is excited to announce a $25,000 challenge grant from an anonymous donor! To meet the challenge, we must raise $25,000 in gifts from new donors, or gifts in higher amounts from previous donors. This is an amazing opportunity to leverage $50,000 in crucial support for our work. Please consider making a first-time gift to support HSC, increasing your annual gift, making a personal gift if you usually give through your company, and asking your friends, family and colleagues to support the organization.

Your gift will help us do the important work of making schools healthier places in which to learn and work.

President Obama's Budget Prioritizes Healthy School Food & Healthy School Environments | by Mark Bishop
When it comes down to it, one of the biggest indicators of an administration's priorities is where it spends money. And for the first time in my memory, we have an administration that is prioritizing children's health. Sharing Beautiful Messages of Good Food with Kids| by Mark Bishop
The other evening I made an awesome dinner. I'll get into the meal later, because to me the interesting part happened with the leftovers the following morning. It was a meal that I assumed would be too "adult" for my son Henry, but I was proven oh-so-wrong. The next morning I was looking through Cooking Light magazine and Henry stopped at every beautiful picture . . . Read more

Our Phone Call with Sec. Vilsack: USDA Reaches Out to Advocates, Bloggers in Promoting Child Nutrition| by Mark Bishop
Last week, we joined in on the first blogger conference call with the USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack. One of the best things about the call was that Secretary Vilsack fielded questions from bloggers. Secretary Vilsack's answer to our question only supported my impression that it's a new day at the USDA. In short, he emphasized the importance of advocacy, the need for individuals and organizations to get involved to make real change. While this isn't totally groundbreaking, it is interesting and very, very encouraging to hear the head of the USDA talking openly about building networks to advocate for changing nutrition policy. All of a sudden, the USDA is the biggest advocate for school food policy change. That's new. . . . Read more
