Sponsorship Opportunities Available for Cooking up Change Chicago

Student chefs prepare for Cooking up Change Chicago

2010 has already been an exciting year for Cooking up Change! On March 2, HSC hosted a day of action in Washington, DC where student chefs of Cooking up Change presented the healthy school lunch they designed at a briefing on Capitol Hill. On May 17, high school and college students traveled from across the U.S. to compete in the final round of the first National Cooking up Change healthy cooking contest.

Now, we are thrilled to make our flagship Chicago benefit and healthy cooking contest our most dynamic Cooking up Change yet!

HSC is welcoming new and returning sponsors for our flagship Cooking up Change event in Chicago. The benefit and healthy cooking contest will take place Nov. 4 at Salvage One, an architectural showcase just west of downtown Chicago. The event combines the energy of a culinary competition and the fun of a celebration with the power of HSC’s mission.

Policy Updates

Child Nutrition is Moving: Now's the Time to Act
Urge Your Representative to Make Child Nutrition a Priority

Child Nutrition is moving: now is the time to speak up for healthy school food!

Both the US House of Representatives and the Senate have introduced bills for reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act, the legislation that determines school food policy and resources. HSC is advocating for a reauthorization that makes student health a priority by providing increased funding for better school food. The House bill, the Improving Nutrition for America’s Children Act, includes significantly greater funding than the bill introduced in the Senate.

Now, HSC is advocating for a timely passage of this House bill. Be part of the movement for healthy school food by letting your Representative know that child nutrition must be a priority.

As the Child Nutrition Act is reauthorized once every five years, this is a critical opportunity to shape the future of school food, particularly in light of First Lady Michelle Obama's call to end childhood obesity in a generation. We need your help to ensure that a well-funded reauthorization is passed this year.

Please take a moment to send a letter urging your elected leaders to support a strong and well-funded reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act.

Thank you for being part of this important and timely effort for children’s health.

Six School Food Lessons From My Great-Grandparents | by Mark Bishop
"Every child has a right to be as healthy as present knowledge can make him - Proper feeding is one of the chief factors in health." Sometimes looking to the past can help ground our work of today. That's why I was so thrilled when I found my copy of Diet for the School Child printed in... get this... 1919. The artwork in this piece is comically beautiful, and the language is frequently tortured, but all in all, there is a consistent truth that comes out: students need healthy meals to succeed. . . . Healthy, Kid-Friendly Recipe: Black Bean Cakes | by Mark Bishop
Henry loves going to Chipotle for black beans, rice and chicken. I thought maybe I could compete by making black beans and rice at home -- although when I made my beans, I shredded carrots and broccoli into the dish for extra nutrition. And while these homemade beans were really good, Henry wasn't into them -- and my wife can only eat so many beans in a given week. The end result was that we had a lot of black beans sitting around in my fridge. So I decided to turn lemons into lemonade, or at least turn black beans into black bean cakes. All kids love cakes, right? . . . . Read More

Now It's Global: Green Cleaning Lessons Resonate Around the World | by Mark Bishop
In 2003, when we at HSC kicked off our first green cleaning pilot projects, I wouldn’t have thought there were international implications -- but the past months have proven that wrong. As the world gets smaller and smaller, we are starting to realize that the need for healthy schools is universal. . . . . Read more
