HSC Recognizes Innovations for Wellness & Environment
Innovation Showcase Spotlights Unique Products & Services

Healthy Schools Campaign is pleased to recognize three innovators in the 2009-2010 Innovation Showcase! Congratulations to:

HSC conducted a nationwide search for new and innovative products and services that help create healthier school environments. The search focused specifically on two areas: the environmental impact of a school, and the way that a school supports healthy eating and physical activity for students. Companies from all corners of the marketplace were invited to share their unique inventions and innovations. We are pleased to recognize three innovators:

Activeion Pro is a hand-held spray bottle that converts tap water into a powerful cleaner and sanitizer.

This enables facility management teams to clean surfaces in schools without using chemicals. ActiveIon "gives true meaning to 'innovation,'" said showcase judge Joe Agron of American School & University. "It's especially applicable in the education environment -- a fascinating product." Canteen Waterwerkz vending delivers healthy chilled beverages in an environmentally friendly way using a machine that mixes water-based drinks in re-sealable pouches, chills and serves them in seconds.

It serves good-for-you drinks with less packaging and more energy efficiency than a conventional vending machine. "It's exciting to see a product design that takes into account both kids' health and the health of our environment" said showcase judge Mark Bishop of HSC.

Peaceful Playgrounds is a do-it-yourself kit that allows schools to transform their playground or schoolyard with colorful, active games.

The kit helps teachers create play environments that reduce bullying and injuries while increasing physical activity. Peaceful Playgrounds is "an excellent innovative idea on a number of levels," said showcase judge Jay Snyder of the Association of School Business Officials International. "It makes recess more of a learning and creative experience for the students. It's safe for the students and the environment. And it's easy to clean, which is very important to the custodians, directors of facilities, and to the school and school districts in general." Learn more »

The products spotlighted in the Innovation Showcase were selected by a judging panel with representatives of HSC, American School & University and the Association of School Business Officials International. The judges selected products based on the creativity of the innovation and the potential positive impact. Learn more at www.healthyschoolscampaign.org/?innovation.

Senate Committee Passes Child Nutrition Proposal Lacking Adequate Funding for Healthy School Food
Send a Letter Supporting More Money for Better Food

School food advocates have been eagerly awaiting action from the Senate on the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act, legislation that determines school food policy and resources for the next five years. Today, the Senate agricultural Committee approved The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 proposed by committee chair Sen. Blanche Lincoln. While this bill includes some strong policy provisions, it does not include sufficient funding for healthier school food.

The funding currently proposed in the Senate is less than half of that proposed by President Obama and barely enough to acknowledge rising food costs, much less improve quality or expand access. It amounts to an increase of merely $0.06 per meal.

This bill is moving quickly and we need Congress to hear from advocates across the U.S. that increased funding for better school food must be a priority.

We must act now. Click here to send a letter asking your senators to increase the funding for schools to provide the healthful meals that support children’s health and learning.

Thank you for being part of this important and timely effort for children’s health.

Registration Open for HSC's 2010 Chicago Marathon Team

Registration is now open for the 2010 Bank of America Chicago Marathon!

This world-class athletic event – to be held this year on 10-10-10 – brings together more than 45,000 runners and 1.5 million cheering spectators from across the globe. HSC invites you to be part of the Healthy Schools marathon team!

To learn more about the HSC marathon experience, check out 2009 team member Michelle Miller's recent blog. She writes:

"As a school nurse, I work for healthy schools, healthy kids, and a healthy future so why not run for healthy schools, healthy kids, and a healthy future? What I didn't anticipate was how much this would help ME. During a months-long training program, I often have periods when my motivation lags. Some Sundays, it's just hard to get out of bed for those long runs. Sometimes after work, I just feel too tired to run those intervals. I'm pretty disciplined and I usually manage to get myself out there -- but when I'm running for HSC, it's like I've got thousands of little supporters giving me that extra push! I just imagine all of those children who are benefiting from every single mile that I cover. Now, it's hard to think about running a marathon and not doing it for charity!"

Help HSC Meet the $25,000 Challenge

HSC is excited to announce a $25,000 challenge grant from an anonymous donor! To meet the challenge, we must raise $25,000 in gifts from new donors, or gifts in higher amounts from previous donors. This is an amazing opportunity to leverage $50,000 in crucial support for our work. Please consider making a first-time gift to support HSC, increasing your annual gift, making a personal gift if you usually give through your company, and asking your friends, family and colleagues to support the organization.

Your gift will help us do the important work of making schools healthier places in which to learn and work.

Now's the Moment to Fund Healthy School Food | by Mark Bishop
For months we've been championing a large increase for school food programs, with the belief that this reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act offers the opportunity to make real change for school food. With President Obama calling for significant increases in funding, the First Lady calling for policy changes and funding, and advocates speaking up across the nation, we feel this is the time to change how we feed kids at school. And we looked to their proposals as a strong starting point, not a limit: a floor, not a ceiling . . . . Read more

Senate Action on Child Nutrition: Good Policy Needs Funding| by Mark Bishop
School food advocates have been eagerly awaiting action from the Senate on the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act. Sen. Blanche Lincoln has issued her proposal: The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 includes many excellent policy provisions allowing the USDA to set improved national nutrition standards for school meals and calling for a ban on the sale of junk food in schools. However, it proposes a funding increase of merely $0.06 per meal. This proposed funding is simply not enough. No matter how strong the standards or how robust the policy, the fact is that schools’ ability to provide healthy food still comes down to money. . . . Read more

Let’s Get Moving: Study Shows Little Physical Activity for Chicago Teens| by Rosa Ramirez
Chicago’s youth could be at increased risk for chronic illness as adults, reports a new study by Children’s Memorial Research Center revealing that the percentage of Chicago teens participating in the recommended amount of daily physical activity is stunningly low. Why is this? What does this mean for the future of Chicago teens? And what can we do to reverse the trend? . . . Read more

The (Not Really) Largest Increase Ever For School Lunch Programs| by Mark Bishop
One speaking point we've been hearing a lot lately is that Sen. Blanche Lincoln's current proposal for re-authorization of the Child Nutrition Act includes the single largest funding increase ever proposed for school food. But it really doesn't. What hasn't been widely reported lately is that the school food program receives annual increases to cover inflation and the rising cost of food. . . . Read more

Through Your Lens Student Photo Spotlight: "Trailer Classroom" | by Lindsay Muscato
"There are 6 trailer classrooms at our school, because there is not enough room in the actual building. The trailers stand on concrete cinder blocks, and this one has wires sticking out from the bottom of it." . . . Read more

Newsweek Takes on Obesity Crisis with Michelle Obama Cover Story and More | by Mark Bishop
Michelle Obama made the cover of Newsweek with the first article she's written to promote the Let's Move initiative -- but the real story here is Newsweek's coverage of the obesity crisis. Newsweek provides an overview of the obesity crisis and in doing so becomes one of the largest mainstream advocates for reform. What was most striking to me is how reporter Claudia Kalb presents the enormity of the challenge, emphasizing that no single person is at fault, and no single silver bullet can change the situation. . . Seven Generations Ahead Announces Teacher Training Connecting Kids with Fresh, Healthy Foods | by Courtney Woods
Over the past 40 years, obesity rates amongst children have quadrupled, and children report eating fewer fresh fruits and vegetables than ever before. In a culture where children know more about fast food than about where their food comes from, educators need effective curriculum and strategies to change eating habits among school children. . . McCormick Elementary School: Success with Recess! | by Marissa Starin
With every barrier comes the opportunity to overcome it. McCormick Elementary School, a Chicago public school, recognized the importance of physically active students and decided to implement recess. Like many schools, they dealt with obstacles: time, budgetary concerns, and safety hazards -- but they succeeded in making recess a regular part of the school day. Wondering how you can implement recess, too? Read on for lessons from McCormick's experience. . . . Read more

It Happens Every Noon: Looking Back as We Look Ahead for School Food Reform | by Mark Bishop
This video outlines the early days of the school lunch program. It's entertaining just for its nostalgic aspects. And in some ways, it highlights what we're missing in today's school lunch program. Maybe you can never go back, but taking a moment to look at a familiar program through a different (in this case nostalgic) lens can help us see all the ways we can do better -- by addressing the problems that still exist. . . . Quick, Healthy After-School Snacks: Crunchy, Salty and Sweet! | by Kim Stakal
The kids come home from school, and the first thing they want is a snack. Sound familiar? For kids and adults alike, many of us have a particular type of snack attack that hits. Some crave salty foods, some crave sweets, and some just want something crunchy. Here are some fast, family-friendly snack ideas organized into snack-attack category, so that you can hit the snack craving with something both satisfying and healthy. . . . Read more

Strong Leadership and Great Promise on School Environmental Health from EPA and Dept. of Education | by Mark Bishop
Earlier this year, I had the privilege of attending the 10th annual Tools for School National Symposium. And as a school health advocate for over 15 years, I have to say that this conference really is a great marker showing how far we've come, while still acknowledging how far we need to go. I left the conference with three main thoughts: There is now leadership like never before; it's exciting to see the EPA partnering with the Department of Education; and wow, this is how to run a conference. . . . . We Heard It ...

"What we've done in Chicago really is the on-the-ground embodiment of what Michelle Obama is talking about—in trying to get school food reform, in trying to engage teachers and students and parents and community members to prioritize students' health."
