HSC Supports Farm and Food Policy Project
HSC has joined with more than 350 organizations in support of the Farm and Food Policy Project, a diverse group of family farms, rural, public health, anti-hunger, conservation, faith-based and other groups that have come together to inform the 2007 Farm Bill. FFPP hosted a press conference Monday, Jan. 22, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. to announce the release of "Seeking Balance," a report on U.S. farm and food policy (PDF).
The cross-sector approach of FFPP reflects a commitment to advocate for policies that address the full spectrum of public needs covered by this critical piece of legislation. This broad and growing alliance believes that by working together, it can make real progress toward supporting family farms and local communities, improving health and nutrition, ending hunger, and increasing biodiversity and improving the quality of our soil, water and air.

This report addresses a variety of factors that have reduced play, including a hurried lifestyle, changes in family structure, and increased attention to academics and enrichment activities at the expense of recess or free child-centered play. This report offers guidelines on how pediatricians can advocate for children by helping families, school systems, and communities consider how best to ensure that play is protected as they seek the balance in children’s lives to create the optimal developmental milieu. We Heard It ... |
"It would be the height of irony if we successfully identified overweight kids through B.M.I. screening and notification while continuing to feed them atrocious quality meals and snacks, with limited if any opportunities for phys ed in school."

Dr. David Ludwig, director of the Optimal Weight for Life program at Children's Hospital Boston, quoted in The New York Times, Jan. 8, 2007

Help Bring Safe Routes to School to Your Community
The new Illinois' Safe Routes to School is a federally-funded initiative that will provide approximately $23 million in funding over the next several years to Illinois schools and communities. Funds can be used for projects and programs that encourage and enable students to safely walk and bike to school. Funding is 100 percent, requiring no local match.
To help you prepare for this opportunity, training sessions are being offered throughout the state in February 2007. Attending a training will prepare you to develop a comprehensive school travel plan and apply for funding. Register for training | More information
