Charter Schools in HSC Collaborative Kick Off New School Food Programs

More than three thousand students at three Chicago public charter schools are eating healthy, freshly prepared school food as part of new school meal programs this year – and even their teachers are lining up to get a great tasting lunch from the school cafeteria.

Namaste Charter School, Noble Street Charter School and Perspectives Charter School launched new school food programs after working together with HSC to develop goals and strategies for implementation. HSC facilitated meetings where school leaders shared their varied experiences in both the logistics and the big picture of implementing a healthy school food program.

"This was truly one of those situations where the sum became stronger than each of the parts," said Jean Saunders, HSC’s director of school wellness. "Each school learned from the others’ insight, even though their goals were different."

Noble Street came to the discussions with the goal of making a significant food transformation, while Namaste hoped to bring more healthy food to a long-established focus on wellness and Perspectives hoped to maintain a high quality of food while decreasing costs. As charter schools, each organization has flexibility in aspects of operation – including food service – that allows them to make such changes.

All three of the schools achieved these goals through solutions they developed in working together with HSC. As the school year continues, the group will share lessons learned with each other and with other schools interested in making changes. Stay posted for updates in the HSC newsletter and magazine.

HSC Lunch & Learn Series Features Green Building and Green Cleaning Pioneers

HSC hosted a series of Lunch & Learn events in the Chicago area during the national Greenbuild conference, featuring pioneers in the fields of green building and green cleaning.

Anja Caldwell, the Green Building Program Manager for Montgomery County Public Schools and self-described "proud parent of the first LEED certified school in Maryland," shared her insight on ways that all schools can benefit from green changes and ideas.

Kurt Larson, who worked closely on New York’s implementation of a policy requiring green cleaning in schools, shared lessons learned in his experiences as Illinois leaders prepare to embark on implementation of a similar policy.

HSC Receives American Institute of Architects Illinois President’s Award

The American Institute of Architects Illinois (AIA) has presented HSC with their President’s Award, the only annual award presented to an organization outside of AIA. We’re honored to receive this award from a group we hold in such high esteem.

HSC has worked with AIA to bring the green schools message to design professionals in Illinois through trainings, policy and outreach. It’s through this collaboration that we were able to help pass legislation requiring that all new schools built in Illinois with state funds meet energy-efficient design standards.

We thank AIA for this award and look forward to continuing our work together to bring the benefits of green design to all students, teachers and schools staff.

Austin Parents Address Indoor Air Quality in Environmental Justice Training

HSC and Community Organizing Family Issues (COFI) hosted the second training in the Environmental Health / Environmental Justice series for parents in Chicago’s Austin community on Oct. 16.

Guest speakers from the Safer Pest Control Initiative and Citizen Action Network made presentations on reducing dangerous chemical exposures through integrated pest management and safer practices for diesel bus idling, while HSC staff discussed safer cleaning practices and indoor air quality.

Parents from Austin-area schools will use the Green Flag program to identify and implement measures to improve the indoor air quality in their schools and to examine policy issues that affect the school environment.

HSC Launches School Nurse Leadership Training on Environmental Health

School nurses from throughout Illinois gathered in Elgin, Ill. on Nov. 2 for the first session in HSC’s three-part School Nurse Leadership Training series, Improving Your School’s Environmental Health. The session focused on connections between indoor air quality and student health issues such as asthma.

A growing body of scientific evidence points to environmental exposures—including those in schools—as major factors in childhood disease. These exposures contribute to poor indoor air quality that can lead to allergies, asthma, increased rates of infectious disease, chronic sinusitis, headaches, and a variety of respiratory diseases.

School nurses, as the only medical professionals in the school setting, have an important responsibility to play an active role in promoting school environmental health. The training will empower school nurses to create change in their schools and to engage in setting policy to make schools healthier places.

HSC's School Nurse Leadership Training series in Springfield, Ill. is kicking off on Nov. 13.

Parents Establish School Wellness Teams to Implement District Policy

Parents demonstrate ideas for in-class physical activity at a Parents United training

Parent and community leaders in HSC's Parents United for Healthy Schools/Padres Unidos Para Escuelas Saludables are creating School Wellness Teams (or School Health Councils, as they are also called) in schools throughout Chicago. The teams will work on implementing the district wellness policy that addresses food and physical activity in schools.

Parents in the coalition are starting wellness teams at McCormick School, Eli Whitney School, Gary Elementary School, Benito Juarez High School, Otis Elementary School, Andersen Elementary School, Lowell Elementary School, McAuliffe School, Peabody Elementary School, Mitchell School, Chopin Elementary School, and Von Humboldt School.

HSC hosted training for parents interested in beginning wellness teams, and parents continue to meet and exchange lessons learned in the process of implementing the wellness policy.

Happy Halloween! But What About All That Candy? | by Jean Saunders
October 31 marks more than the height of creative costume-making and pumpkin carving—it can also represent the pinnacle of candy consumption by kids. School parties, trick-or-treating and other related festivities often focus on candy, sugar cookies, cupcakes and other sweet treats. Teachers and parents alike are faced with the dilemma of trying to balance the demands (and traditions) for candy, pumpkin-shaped cookies and sugary drinks with more healthy food and beverage offerings that are consistent with the messages about wellness we hope to pass along to our kids. So, what's a grown-up to do? .... Read more

Applauding Healthy School Food in Chicago – And Creative Student Chefs| by Rochelle Davis
It was truly a delight to meet the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) culinary students and teachers who participated in the healthy cooking contest at Cooking up Change, HSC’s annual benefit, and to check out the dishes they entered in the "healthy school lunch" category of the contest. This was even more exciting because the students’ work to create healthy school lunches is part of a much larger school food transformation at CPS. .... Read more
