HSC's Principals for Healthy Schools Director to Share Recess Strategies
Dr. Susan Kurland, director of HSC’s recently-launched Principals for Healthy Schools Project, will join a diverse panel of national experts in addressing the benefits and practical strategies surrounding recess at HSC’s Lunch & Learn: The Power of Recess on April 7.
Dr. Kurland recently retired from her role as principal of Chicago’s Nettlehorst school. Under her leadership, Nettlehorst became a shining example of how schools can incorporate wellness into the school experience. Dr. Kurland will discuss the strategies she used to implement an effective recess program, and the benefits that students and teachers saw as a result - including higher test scores and decreased discipline problems.
Other panelists include Vanessa Foster of Rescuing Recess, a campaign launched by the Cartoon Network to draw attention the important benefits of physical activity; and Dr. Toby Tate, dean of the College of Applied Health Sciences for the University of Illinois at Chicago and an expert on the positive effects of exercise.
Don’t miss this informative, practical (and fun!) look at the power of play in combating childhood obesity, increasing student achievement, cutting down on behavior problems and engaging your community.

Safe Routes to School Projects Funded in Illinois
The Illinois Department of Transportation recently awarded $8.3 million to support 112 projects across the state designed to make it safer for children to walk and bike to school.
Walking or biking (or running and jumping!) to school provides a natural opportunity for children to be physically active on a daily basis, improving their readiness to learn and lowering their risk for obesity-related health problems. HSC serves on the Illinois Safe Routes to School State Network as part of an effort to ensure that more children can take advantage of this opportunity.
The network brings together leaders in health, education, bicycle advocacy, and community organizations to reduce the barriers that keep children from walking or biking to school.
