Cooking Up Change Highlights

High school students put the finishing touches on dinner

More than 300 supporters came out on Sept. 26 to celebrate HSC’s work to make schools healthier places and to mingle with friends, taste delicious food prepared by area culinary students, bid on fabulous auction prizes, meet Isabella and Olivia Gerasole of Spatulatta and watch cooking demonstrations by chefs Bruce Sherman of North Pond and Gale Gand of Tru. The evening was perfectly framed by the dramatic views from the Stadium Club at U.S. Cellular Field.

Students and chefs from the Kendall College School of Culinary Arts and the Washburne Culinary Institute wowed guests with special tastings. Future chefs enrolled in culinary programs at the Chicago Public Schools were also on hand to create culinary delights. Students and teachers from the Chicago Vocational Career Academy, Prosser Career Academy, Tilden Achievement Academy and Perspectives Charter School tickled guests’ taste buds with their delicious creations.

A big thanks to everyone who made Cooking up Change such a success!

Speak Out for Illinois Schools Identifies Educational Priorities

Under the umbrella Speak Out for Illinois Schools, HSC has partnered with a non-partisan coalition of state and national organizations and concerned citizens dedicated to quality public schools, including the Illinois PTA, Illinois NAACP State Conference of Branches, the Illinois Association of School Nurses, Communities for Quality Education and Latinos United.

Speak Out for Illinois Schools held six non-partisan education-themed roundtables in September to gauge the education priorities of local community leaders and residents across the state. The results will be gathered and shared with gubernatorial candidates Gov. Rod Blagojevich and Republican challenger State Treasurer Judy Barr Topinka.

Join Webcasts Celebrating October as Children's Health Month

Children's Health Month is always our favorite month, but this year we particularly like the theme: "Promoting Healthy School Environments." The EPA’s Office of Children’s Health Protection and Environmental Education (OCHPEE) lists EPA publications on healthy school environments that are available free of charge, as well as a calendar with action steps for every day in October.

The EPA is also offering interactive Webcasts throughout October to raise awareness about protecting children from school environmental risks, such as indoor air polution. Parents, educators, facility managers, school administrators, architects, design engineers, school nurses, teachers, staff and healthcare practitioners are all invited to take part. Participants will be able to join in the discussion and ask questions of the speakers.
