Guide Author Steve Ashkin Co-Authors Green Cleaning for Dummies

Steve Ashkin, author of the Quick & Easy Guide to Green Cleaning in Schools, has recently co-authored the book Green Cleaning for Dummies. The special industry-specific book made its debut this month at the ISSA conference for leaders in the cleaning and maintenance industries.

Bill Balek, Director of Legislative Affairs for ISSA, said the association’s decision to publish the book was easy. “We are committed to greening the cleaning industry and the time to do it is now,” he said. “Steve Ashkin and David Holly were able to provide trustworthy and unbiased information about this important trend. They were involved in green cleaning long before it became mainstream, and they continue to provide outstanding leadership as green cleaning gains momentum and becomes the norm.”

Green Cleaning for Dummies provides specific coverage on several types of organizations, including schools and universities, health care facilities, and office buildings. Readers will also discover how to measure the impact of going green, choose green products, communicate with clients about their new processes, and implement a green training program.

“Based on our extensive experience greening the cleaning industry, we were able to cut this somewhat technical and confusing topic down to size, making it easy for anyone to get started.” said Ashkin, who has spent more than 25 years in the cleaning industry and the past 17 years advocating for environmentally preferable cleaning.

Legislative Updates

Green Clean Schools Act Passed by Illinois House

The Green Clean Schools Act (HB 898), sailed through the Illinois House with a vote of 88-26. (Check out our press release for more information.) We’re delighted with the bill’s progress and are working with Senate leaders to introduce a version of the bill there.

School nurses, educators, and cleaning professionals across the state contacted their representatives to ask them to support this bill. We know of a number of personal phone calls that directly led to a representative signing on in support.
For more information and updates, visit the Green Clean Schools Act section of our website.

Smooth Transition to Mandatory Green Cleaning in New York

Green cleaning advocates have had their eye on New York since September 2006, when a law requiring green cleaning in schools went into effect throughout the state. The big story now may simply be ease of the transition. School officials and state leaders said the change has been smooth and feedback so far has been positive.

“It’s been a non-issue, really,” said Sue Rau, chair of health and environment for the NY State PTA. “I haven’t heard any complaints from anyone. Schools are doing what the law says, and it looks like their vendors are making it easy for them.” . . . More »

When Dan Cassasanto, chief engineer at Chicago’s Jones College Prep High School, heard about green cleaning, he decided it was worth investigating.

Cassasanto started using the plant-derived multi-use cleaner H2Organge from Green Team Supporter EnvirOx and found it to be just as effective and affordable as traditional cleaners. He replaced five traditional chemical products with H2Orange and is now incorporating other elements of green cleaning, such as scrubbers from Green Team Member Tennant Company.

“It’s totally environmentally safe,” Cassasanto said. “It’s fantastic and it’s very easy to use—I love the simplicity about it. And it smells great.” . . . More »

Association of School Business Officials Supports Green Cleaning

"No one wants to intentionally screw up the air, but it happens when people don't know what they are doing," said Dan Moberly, resident practitioner for indoor air quality for the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO). "When they are cleaning they think 'a little is good, a lot is better,'"

But that kind of thinking is now changing. . . . More »
