Congratulations to the Green Cleaning Award Winners
Judging criteria based on HSC's Quick & Easy Guide

HSC extends our sincere congratulations to the winners of the second annual Green Cleaning in Schools Awards!

Jonesboro Public Schools in Jonesboro, Ark. won the Grand Award and Oswego C.U.S.D. #308 in Oswego, Ill. won Honorable Mention.

HSC co-sponsored the awards program with American School & University magazine and the Green Cleaning Network. The criteria for judging the competition were based on the "five simple steps to a healthy school environment” outlined in HSC's Quick & Easy Guide to Green Cleaning in Schools.

Since releasing the first edition of the Quick & Easy Guide in Oct. 2006 and the second edition in Sept. 2008, HSC has distributed more than 72,500 guides with the support of 39 sponsors and 16 participating organizations.

New Organizations Join Green Team

HSC is pleased to welcome new participating organizations to The Quick & Easy Guide to Green Cleaning in Schools!

Three organizations signed on to the guide for the August 2008 printing of guide’s Second Edition:

• Coalition for Community Schools
• National Association of Elementary School Principals
• U.S. Green Building Council

The School Nutrition Association has signed on for the Spring 2009 printing of the guide.

We welcome the participation of these highly-regarded national organizations and greatly appreciate the work they are doing to promote green cleaning to their members. Many thanks to all of our participating organizations!

Seeking Green Clean Case Studies

HSC is seeking schools with green cleaning programs to spotlight in our website and publications.

We will interview school administrators, facility staff and others about your experience with green cleaning. For example, what benefits have you seen? What has surprised you about green cleaning? Has green cleaning cost more or less than you expected?

Integrated Pest Management - With Falcons| by Mark Bishop
We talk about Integrated Pest Management a lot here at HSC, learning about ways to control pests without using toxic pesticides. But it’s not often that I get to comment on interesting pest control stories, so this comes to me with great joy. Ecolab UK has launched a pest control program for birds (the pests in this case are pigeons) that uses trained falcons. Now I’m not an expert on pigeon control, but the thought of sending trained falcons to scare pigeons from schools brings a smile to my face. And it’s a strategy that has actually been employed successfully in other parts of the UK. . . Read more

EPA Failed to Consult Children's Health Taskforce| by Rochelle Davis
Recently I was honored to be appointed to a taskforce created by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) called the Children's Environmental Health Protection Advisory Committee. This is my first appointment to this type of committee and, while honored, I was not sure how much impact we would really have. I certainly did not want to participate on a committee that served to rubber stamp or give credibility to an administration that has done little to protect the environment and little to recognize that regulations need to take into account the fact that children are more vulnerable to environmental exposures. . . .
