Advocates Prepare for Green Clean National Summit
Building Coalitions for Green Clean Schools Laws

Wed., Nov. 12, 2008
8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. with reception to follow
1800 Massachusetts Avenue, NW
Washington, DC

HSC is pleased to announce the first national summit dedicated to bringing green clean schools laws to every state.

In 2006, the state of New York passed a law requiring green cleaning in schools. In 2007, Illinois passed a similar law. Now, activists in more than a dozen states are planning to introduce legislation requiring schools to protect the health of students and staff by implementing green cleaning programs.

Please join Healthy Schools Campaign and advocates from around the country for a special Green Clean Schools National Summit, building on this momentum to bring health-promoting green cleaning laws to every state in the nation.

The summit will bring together national organizations, corporate leaders, state-level activists and concerned individuals to develop state-specific strategies with lessons learned from previous successful efforts. Summit attendees will have the opportunity to learn about model legislation, see sample materials, discuss responses to common objections and get updates on policy and product development.

Perhaps most importantly, the summit will connect local activists and national organizations to build strong, effective state-level coalitions.

Green Cleaning Award Program Honors Schools

The award program honors schools and their partners that embrace green principles and practices in their maintenance operations, and the judging criteria for the contest are based on The Quick & Easy Guide to Green Cleaning in Schools.

Awards will be presented to multiple exemplary programs, and winners will be profiled in a special supplement of American School & University magazine in Dec. 2008. Stay tuned for details about the winning programs!

Positive Trends in School Food, Pt. 2: Green Cleaning | by Rochelle Davis
I shared my excitement about findings in the 10th annual trend report recently released by the School Nutrition Association showing how healthy food continues to increase in popularity. I do not want to neglect some other interesting notes from this report. The report found that food service departments are becoming much more environmentally responsible

New Studies Will Help Show Benefits of Green Schools| by Rochelle Davis
I was very pleased to see that the U.S. Green Building Council made three generous grants to increase our understanding of how green schools can improve student health and learning. We will be looking forward to the results of these studies. In the meantime, the evidence that already exists clearly shows the benefits of green buildings.

Green Cleaning, Live from ISSA/INTERCLEAN in Las Vegas| by Claris Olson
This week, Rochelle, Mark and I are in Las Vegas at the ISSA/INTERCLEAN trade show launching the second edition of The Quick and Easy Guide to Green Cleaning in Schools. And what a perfect venue it is. It was right here in Vegas that a handful of innovative green cleaning companies made a small gamble on the concept of a simple guide to help schools across the nation transition to green cleaning. What’s really fun for me is seeing the effect that we’ve had: people know about our work and are letting us know that we’re really helping change the marketplace. .
