The judging criteria for the award are based on the Five Simple Steps to Green Cleaning outlined in HSC's Quick & Easy Guide to Green Cleaning in Schools.

Awards will be presented to exemplary programs and winners will be profiled in a special supplement in the December issue of American School & University. Applications must be received by Sept. 10, 2010.

Green Cleaning Victory in Iowa!

Governor Chet Culver (seated) signs the bill while supporters -- including Spencer, son of state Representative Nathan Reicher -- look on.

Iowa has joined the ranks of states requiring green cleaning in schools!

Iowa Gov. Chet Culver recently signed legislation requiring schools, community colleges, and other state agencies to comply with environmentally preferable cleaning and maintenance policies. After July 1, 2012 these buildings will be required to only purchase cleaning and maintenance products that meet nationally recognized standards.

This bill will make a big difference right away: green cleaning is an effective way to protect the health of students and staff while minimizing a school's environmental impact. Every school day, more than 53 million students and 5 million staff members step foot into schools.

HSC supports state-level green cleaning legislation to promote healthy indoor environments for these students and staff, reduce chemical exposure, cut back on waste and improve sustainability efforts.

Kudos to the Iowa General Assembly for enacting this important health-promoting legislation.

Green Cleaning Spotlight: Montgomery County Public Schools, Rockville, Md. | by Lindsay Muscato
Congratulations to Montgomery County Public Schools (MPCS) for winning the School District Grand Award for green cleaning. In 1997, MPCS began going green by switching from an oil-based floor finish to a water-based finish. Energy-efficient scrubbers use only clean water to capture dust particles from hard floor surfaces, eliminating mops and buckets. . . . Read More
