What role does your school's cleaning program play in protecting children and staff from H1N1? How can you prevent the spread of infection without causing more harm with potentially toxic chemicals?

Healthy Schools Campaign, American School & University and the Green Cleaning Network are pleased to present a special webinar designed to highlight best practices and practical tips for green cleaning in the age of H1N1. This webinar, originally presented on Jan. 20, 2010, is now available on-demand at no cost.

Green Clean Schools Legislation Up for Debate in Wisconsin, Iowa and Hawaii

Legislators in a number of states are actively considering green clean schools legislation. Some of these current efforts include:

Wisconsin: The Wisconsin Legislature is debating AB 578, which could help schools create common-sense green cleaning policies. This bill passed the committee and is currently on floor debate. To help support this legislation, visit www.greencleanWI.org

Iowa: House File 823 passed the assembly and is currently being attached to Senate File 2335. The bill would require the state board of regents to define environmentally preferable cleaning and maintenance products and require schools to comply with purchasing requirements. To help support this legislation, visit www.greencleanschools.org/iowa

Also of interest is a bill in Hawaii. In 2009 ,Hawaii passed a bill to require schools use Green Seal certified products. This year an amendment (HI SB 2709) has been introduced which would expand the program to include products recognized by EcoLogo and Design for the Environment.

Third Annual Green Cleaning Awards Show Progress, Innovation in Green Cleaning | by Lindsay Muscato
Steve Ashkin, executive director of the Green Cleaning Network and author of HSC's Quick & Easy Guide to Green Cleaning in Schools, commented on the tremendous work of the winners of this year's prestigious Green Cleaning Award for Schools and Universitiesin. He writes, "Nominees were using all green products, which is an indication of the mainstreaming of green cleaning. Manufacturers, along with distributors and service providers, all are embracing green cleaning. As a result, products are widely available, performance has improved, and costs have declined. . . ." Beware the Unscrupulous Vendor: Disinfectants, H1N1 and Green Cleaning | by Mark Bishop
The EPA issued a press release warning us all "to beware of unscrupulous vendors" who try to sell us ineffective or unnecessary products that claim to protect us against H1N1. According to the press release: "Unfortunately some vendors may try to take advantage of people’s fears at a time like this and market products that aren’t effective or make unsubstantiated claims.” This is right on. And while it applies to the purchases we make in our homes, it also is an important lesson for our schools -- especially when implementing a green cleaning program . . . . Read More
